Council drops Chamber-opposed Hours of
Operation Ordinance

On April 8, the Elk Grove City Council declined to take further action on a proposed ordinance limiting hours of operation for almost all businesses in Elk Grove.

Such an ordinance would be detrimental to the growth of jobs in Elk Grove, noted Chamber CEO Janet Toppenberg in comments before the Council.  The proposed ordinance would have limited hours of operation to 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. for new businesses unless a Conditional Use Permit is granted.  An application for such a permit could cost over $5,000 and, since the criteria for issuance is not clarified in the ordinance, there would be no assurance that the permit would be granted.

Several business owners and managers attended the Council meeting to indicte their concern about the negative impacts of the ordinance.
